Setting clear terms with friends and family

It can be harder to discuss a service with someone you know. A clear approach agreed in advance can prevent confusion and protect the relationship.
Choose your approach
You might decide that friends and family book at the published price, that you offer a limited courtesy under specific conditions, or that you do not provide certain services to people close to you. There is no single policy that suits everyone. Consider your availability, costs, comfort and any professional boundaries.
If you offer a different price, write down who it applies to, which services are included, when it expires and whether it can be combined with another offer. Check the terms against any commitments or requirements that apply to your business.
Use a simple reply
You can say: “I’d love to see you. I use the same booking process and prices for everyone, so here’s the link.” Or: “I’m not able to offer that service to friends, but I can suggest someone else.” Use wording that is honest and kind.
Avoid inventing a reason or agreeing to something you already know will cause resentment. If you choose to make a gift, say clearly that it is a one-off gift and explain what it includes.
Keep boundaries practical
Friends should use the normal booking route, respect appointment times and follow the same cancellation terms. If you do not want to take a booking, respond directly rather than leaving the request unanswered. Do not share private appointment or health details with mutual friends.
A consistent process can make the interaction feel ordinary. It lets the other person decide whether the service fits and lets you work without a second conversation about what was implied.
This is a personal business choice. Review any price or policy implications with an accountant or qualified adviser when needed.
